Rapid City attend inter-club

Neepawa 4-H Fat Stock Show and Sale was held Wednesday, July 6 at Neepawa fairgrounds. Opening ceremonies were at 9 a.m. with all clubs in the show ring to start the day with the singing of O Canada by Rapid City Beef Club and stating the 4-H pledge by Neepawa Club. Judges were Darren Ippilto from Saskatchewan and Jeff McRae from Brandon. Announcer was Ron Kristjansson, clerk was Barb Kristjansson, show marshals were Tom and Alana Madsen; photographer was Amanda Woychyshyn; ring persons were Sydney deKoning and Greg Woychyshyn.

Grooming classes were first on the agenda, with the following results for our club: senior, Drew Horner second and James Reid fourth; intermediate Wyatt Inglis first, Gavin Reid fourth and Thijs VandeLangemheen sixth; junior Justin Mckee second (first split), Brooklyn Hedley first. Anja VandeLangemheen third and Mona VandeLangemheen fourth (third split), overall junior grooming, Brooklyn; cloverbud, Zane Finlay fourth (first split), Sierra Inglis second (second split). Senior showmanship, Drew third, James fourth; intermediate, Gavin first, Wyatt third, Thijs, fourth, overall showman, Gavin; junior Anja first, Mona second, Brooklyn third; cloverbud Zane third (first split) and Sierra fourth (second split). 

Following grooming and showmanship, groups of three steers and heifers from each club were shown. Rapid City used steers from Drew (market and progeny) and Wyatt, receiving second place; heifers of Drew, Brooklyn and Wyatt won second. 

After lunch the show resumed with inter-club grooming; members from all clubs are put on teams and they groom an animal. There were five placings with the following results for Rapid City members: first place, Brooklyn’s team; second place, Sierra’s team; third, Justin’s team; fifth, James’ team.

Zane placed third in beginning beef conformation class.

Justin was third, yearling Simmental heifer; Thijs was fourth yearling Angus heifer; Brooklyn, first yearling Shorthorn heifer; Sierra, second yearling Shorthorn heifer; crossbreed/all other yearling heifers, Drew second, Anja third, Mona fourth and Wyatt fifth; James was first progeny heifer, Wyatt fourth and Gavin fifth; Drew, Sierra and James all won money in the best homegrown yearling heifer competition. Grand champion yearling heifer is open to the top two from each breed and progeny class; receiving prize money were Drew, Brooklyn, Sierra and James. Two-year-old heifers with calf at foot were Wyatt first and James second; Wyatt had the champion continuation heifer and supreme female.

Steers were shown in weight classes with Brooklyn placing first in Class I, Wyatt first in Class III, Sierra first in Class IV, Justin third in Class V, Drew first and Thijs second in Class VI, Drew second and Thijs fourth in progeny steer. Drew had the champion home raised steer and grand champion steer; others receiving money were Sierra, Brooklyn, Wyatt, Drew 9(pogeny) and Thijs.

The last class of the day was the stall competition; Rapid City placed third. After supper was the sale, which was conducted by auctioneer Ward Cutler; Terry Woychyshyn, Keith Cleaver and Brad Delgaty were ringmen. Stoney Creek Transport provided trucking to Brandon and Gladstone marts, which held and resold any steers purchased for resale, free of charge.
