On Saturday, Dec. 6 Rivers United Church participated in the Santa Claus parade on our float which was equipped with two pews (one facing each side of the streets), an oversized stained glass “window” (cardboard), a few bales for extra seating and appropriate decorations. Carolling through the streets of Rivers were Karen Davies, Pat Dyck, Connie van Dixhoorn, Shelley Foster, Lesley McFadden, Danielle Laferriere, Debbie Johnston, Dianne Kowalchuk, Hall Sveistrup, Dave and Donna Falkevitch, Karen Cullen, Lorrie Dyer, some children and even a dog!

The pews in our church building were filled on Dec. 14 as the Sunday school presented The Children's Christmas Story. Rod Foster narrated the traditional pageant while the excited children, wearing their wonderful costumes, portrayed the nativity scene. There was no room at The Cozy River Inn nor Home and Away Lodge so Mary and Joseph settled in a stable where baby Jesus was born. Gabrielle announced the good news! Shepherds came with their sheep and angels sang from the heavens. Led by the brightly shining star of the east, wisemen travelled by camel to bring gifts to the newborn king. As a result of all the children enacting the story, there were many heartwarming smiles, and perhaps even a few tears, in the congregation!  Sunday school leaders Shelley Foster and Becky Stewart are to be thanked and congratulated on their hardwork, dedication and creativity!

On Sunday, Dec. 28 Rivers United is hosting the second annual Lessons and Carol service spearheaded by Rivers Ministerial Association. The four other churches in town (Anglican, Baptist, Catholic and Pentecostal) have agreed to close for this week and encourage their congregations to attend this ecumenical service, which will be followed by a potluck. The reading of Scripture (lessons) and singing of songs (carols) will begin at 11 a.m.; everyone is most welcome to join us for what is sure to be another packed house!
