Steelers' Thomas named MJHL player of the week; league news and notes

Parker Thomas of the Selkirk Steelers has been named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League player of the week for the week ending Oct. 6.

The veteran Steeler forward was outstanding in two games, reflected in his one goal and five assists. The 20-year-old from Winnipeg tops the Steelers scoring race with 15 points and sits third overall in league scoring.

The runners up for the award were 20-year-old forward Justin Valentino of the Swan Valley Stampeders and 20-year-old forward Dylan Butler of the Portage Terriers.

Oil Caps deal Gejdos

The Virden Oil Capitals shipped 19-year-old forward Dylan Gejdos to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for future considerations.

Gejdos, from Medicine Hat, Alta., had three goals and eight points last season in 41 games for the Oil Caps. He scored the first goal in the Oil Capitals franchise history on Sept. 21, 2012 against the Dauphin Kings.

Meanwhile, the Winkler Flyers have traded 19-year-old defenceman Dylan Kuczek and future considerations to the Melfort Mustangs for 18-year-old defenceman Zak Hicks and 20-year-old goaltender Mitch Maraschiello.


Three MJHL teams in CJHL top 20 rankings

This week, the CJHL released its top 20 rankings and it’s good news for the MJHL as there are a total of three teams that made the grade.

The defending champion Steinbach Pistons currently sit in 10th place, while the Portage Terriers and Virden Oil Capitals sit 18th and 20th respectively.

The AJHL's Fort McMurray Oil Barons are ranked No. 1, followed by the La Ronge Ice Wolves (SJHL) and the Brooks Bandits (AJHL).
