Weekend sports wrap: Natives lose to Wolverines, Kings; Williams entertains at Neepawa Sports Dinner

The following is a complete look-back on what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives fall to Wolverines, Kings

The Neepawa Natives lost both of their games over the weekend in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action.

The Natives travelled to Waywayseecappo and wound up dropping a 7-2 decision to the Wolverines on Friday night.

Aaron Dupasquier scored two goals for the Wolverines, while Drake Bodie, Dylan Nelson, Jared Sprink, J.J. Cruikshank and George Splichal netted the other the other tallies for Wayway en route to the win.

Derrick Brooks and Jaret Smith were the goal scorers for the Natives.

Mitch Wiebe made 20 saves to pick up the win in net for the Wolverines, while Michael Gudmandson ended up with the loss between the pipes for Neepawa, stopping 26 of 32 shots.

On Sunday, the Natives wound up falling 7-1 to the Dauphin Kings at the Yellowhead Centre.

Jesse Bernard and Mitch VanTeeling each scored twice, while Taylor Sanheim, Michael Sofillas and Brendan McKay netted the other goals for Dauphin in the win.

Henry Berger scored the lone goal for the Natives, who now sit with a 4-9-3 record.

Jeremy Pominville was the winning netminder for Dauphin, making 25 saves. Meanwhile, Natives goaltenders Davy Fisher and Tyson Verhelst shared the net in the loss for Neepawa. Fisher played the first two periods, stopping 21 of 25 shots, before Verhelst played the remaining 20 minutes, stopping nine of 12 shots directed his way.

In other MJHL news, the Virden Oil Capitals have acquired 18-year-old forward Ryan McQueen from the SJHL's Flin Flon Bombers for future considerations.

Dave 'Tiger' Williams headlines Neepawa Sports Dinner

The fifth annual Sports Dinner in Neepawa took place on Saturday at the Yellowhead Centre.

Former NHLer Dave 'Tiger' Williams was the keynote speaker at the event.

Williams kept the crowd laughing during his time on stage, as he spoke about some of the highlights of his career as well as other hockey-related topics.

The dinner also included comedian Tim Nutt, who has had a lengthy career in the industry including stops at the Just For Laughs in Montreal and Toronto.

Wheat Kings lose two

The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings lost both of their first two games of their west coast road trip on Friday and Saturday night.

On Friday, the Wheat Kings lost 7-1 to the Spokane Chiefs. Eric Roy scored the lone goal for the Wheat Kings, while Killarney's Reid Gow had four assists for the Chiefs.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Tri-City Americans. Taylor Cooper had the only goal for the Wheat Kings in the loss.

The Wheat Kings, who now sit with a 7-7-0 record, will travel to Seattle to take on the Thunderbirds on Tuesday night.


Farmers fall to Cougars, Nordics

The Neepawa Farmers lost their first two games of the Tiger Hills Hockey League season.

On Friday, the Neepawa Farmers lost 5-2 to the Swan Lake Cougars in their regular season opener at the Yellowhead Centre. Neil Ernest and Dan Moran scored for Neepawa in the loss.

On Saturday, the Farmers travelled to Glenboro and dropped a 6-2 decision to the Nordics. Cam Tibbett and Nathan Leblanc scored for the Farmers in the loss.

BU review: Bobcats open regular season with wins

The defending Canada West champion Brandon University Bobcats men's volleyball team won both of their games over the weekend to open up their conference regular season at the Healthy Living Centre.

On Friday, Sebastien Steigmeier had 17 kills and 14 digs to help the Bobcats defeat the Regina Cougars in four sets. The Bobcats would follow that up with a straight set win over Regina with the help of Sam Tuivai's 14 kills on Saturday.

The BU women's volleyball team won both of their games as well, defeating the Cougars in five sets on Friday and then defeating Regina in four sets on Saturday.

Meanwhile, both BU basketball teams were on the road over the weekend, taking part in pre-season games. The men's squad was in Winnipeg and was able to win both of their games against the University of Winnipeg on Friday by a score of 72-55 and on Saturday by a score of 83-80.

The women's team meanwhile traveled to North Dakota and wound up losing both of their contests -- falling 82-62 to Jamestown College on Friday and 92-78 to Mayville State University on Saturday.


Chiefs lose to Wheat Kings, rebound against Central Plains

The Yellowhead Chiefs lost 4-1 to the Brandon Wheat Kings in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action on Friday night.

Derek Cross scored the lone goal for the Chiefs in the loss.

On Sunday, the Chiefs rebounded with a 5-3 win over the Central Plains Capitals in Shoal Lake.

Five different scorers helped the Chiefs pick up the win as Logan Young, Josh Martin, Tanner Koroscil, Logan Robinson and Tyler Dereniwski netted the tallies, helping Yellowhead improve to 4-4-0-0 this season.

Cougars fall to Pilots

The inaugural season for the Assiniboine Community College Cougars women's soccer team came to a close over the weekend.

The Cougars lost 10-0 to the Providence Pilots in a semifinal game at the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference championship on Saturday.

After the event, it was announced that Ashley Scott and Jill Kerr of the Cougars were named MCAC all-stars.


Hawrysh wins

Brandon product Cassie Hawrysh was a co-winner of the national women's skeleton championship.

Hawrysh wound up tied for top spot overall with a two-run time of 1:49.62 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Russell's Jon Montgomery ended up in fifth place overall on the men's side.

 

Fowler wins memorial bonspiel; McEwen wins

Lois Fowler of Brandon defeated Hamiota's Sandra Cowling 5-4 to win the Lloyd Gunnlaugson Memorial Bonspiel over the weekend.

Fowler finished with a perfect 6-0 record at the event.

Meanwhile, Mike McEwen captured the World Curling Tour's Cactus Pheasant Classic on Sunday.

McEwen defeated Switzerland's Sven Michel 8-0 in the championship final.


Jets defeat Stars in a shootout; fall to Avalanche

The NHL's Winnipeg Jets defeated the Dallas Stars 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday night.

Evander Kane scored the regulation goal for the Jets, while Andrew Ladd netted the shootout winner for Winnipeg.

On Sunday, the Jets wound up falling 3-2 to the Colorado Avalanche.

Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler scored for the Jets, who dropped to 5-6-2 this season.


Lions defeat Eagles to win title

The Fort Garry Lions defeated the East Side Eagles in the all-Winnipeg championship final in the Manitoba Major Football League on Saturday.

The Lions edged the defending champion Eagles 17-14.

The Westman Wolverines lost to the Eagles in a semifinal earlier this month.
