The Brandon-based Neelin Spartans lost a heartbreaking five-set thriller to the MBCI Hawks in Monday night's AAAA provincial girls high school volleyball championship final in Winnipeg.

Holding a 2-1 set lead, the Spartans saw themselves jump out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set. However the Hawks ended up going on a 14-2 run and eventually would tie the game at two sets apiece. The momentum the Hawks had from their comeback carried over into the fifth set as MBCI would eventually take down the Spartans, and in the process, ruin any chance Neelin had at winning a second straight AAAA title.

Paige Thomson had 12 kills on the night for Neelin, while Kristine Ward and Alison Quiring each had nine kills each. Thomson and teammate Amy Gordon were named tournament all-stars.
