The Neepawa Tigers have been a busy team over the past little while.
The high school hockey team recently traveled to Huron, South Dakota to take part in the Rooster Cup, Nov. 29 - Dec. 1. The three day tournament, consisted of seven teams from South Dakota taking on five teams from North Dakota, Wyoming and Canada.
The South Dakota clubs joined forces to form Team South Dakota, while the remainder of the teams, Neepawa included, formed Team North America. The teams earned points based on the outcome of each of the 20 games that took place. The team that had the most points after all the games had been played was declared the Rooster Cup champion.
Team South Dakota wound up winning the Rooster Cup title, however the Tigers put forth a solid showing, winning three of their four games, defeating Brookings, Huron and Sioux Falls. The Tigers accounted for six of the eight points Team North America collected during the event.
"We represented Manitoba high school hockey very well," said Tigers head coach Gary Salmon.
A highlight for the Tigers during the event came prior to puck drop between Neepawa and Brookings. After a malfunction with the Canadian national anthem recording, Tigers players showed their Canadian pride by singing the remainder of the anthem.
"Without hesitation, they continued to sing it [anthem] for the fans in attendance at the arena," said Salmon.
After returning home, the Tigers didn't have much time to rest as the club is currently taking part in the 23rd annual Victoria Inn High School Hockey Tournament in Brandon.
The Tigers opened the tournament with a 5-3 win over the Fort Frances Muskies on Thursday. Wyatt Salmon scored twice for the Tigers in the win.
The Tigers lost in the Victoria Inn Division consolation final last year at the event.
The tournament wraps up on Sunday.
