Weekend sports wrap: Lindsay scores twice as Natives pick up big win; Farmers make playoffs

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
Natives grab two big points over Wolverines
The Neepawa Natives are doing their best to remain in the hunt the fifth and final playoff spot in the Sher-Wood Division in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League over the weekend.
Drake Lindsay opened the scoring with a power play marker in the first period and also netted the game winner with the man advantage in the third as the Natives defeated the host Waywayseecappo Wolverines 5-3 on Saturday night.
Robert Briem tied the game for Wayway later in the first period before Devon Schade gave the Wolverines their first lead of the night at the 5:56 mark of the second -- both goals coming with the man advantage.
The Natives replied with a power play marker of their own as Steven Phillips found the back of the net at the 12:32 mark to make the score 2-2.
Briem would net his second tally of the contest a little over two minutes later to once again put the Wolverines on top before Riley Hillis' 15th goal of the season knotted things up at three apiece a short while later.
Lindsay scored early in the final period on the power play to give the Natives a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Phillips scored his second of the night in an empty net with only five seconds left to seal it for Neepawa.
Tyson Verhelst made 35 stops to pick up the win in net for Neepawa, while Justin Holder finished the night with 28 saves between the pipes for the Wolverines.
The Natives currently sit four points behind the Wolverines for the fifth and final playoff spot.
Natives notes . . .
- The Natives power play was clicking on Saturday. The team finished the night 3-for-4 on the power play.
- Drake Lindsay was named the first star on the night, registering two goals and was a plus-2 for Neepawa. He is now tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 goals and 35 points in 52 games.
- The Natives have only eight games remaining on their regular season schedule. The club's next contest is on Friday when they host the Virden Oil Capitals. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Tigers defeat Raiders; Rempel scores in WHSHL all-star game
The Neepawa Tigers ended their regular season on a high note in the Westman High School Hockey League.
Brendan Harris netted a hat trick, while team captain Garett Rempel scored twice helping the Tigers defeat the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders 10-1 at the Yellowhead Centre.
The Westman High School Hockey League held its all-star game on Sunday afternoon in Hamiota.
Team Gold, which included four members of the Tigers, blanked Team Black by a score of 5-0.

Lisoway scores as Wheat Kings take down Broncos; fall to Swift Current on Sunday
Neepawa's Quinitin Lisoway scored a goal and added an assist as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Swift Current Broncos 8-1 at Westman Communications Group Place in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Tim McGauley scored twice, while Richard Nejezchleb, John Quenneville, Jesse Gabrielle, Jayce Hawryluk and Eric Roy netted the other tallies for Brandon in the win.
The Wheat Kings travelled to Swift Current on Sunday to complete a home-and-home set with the Broncos and wound up falling 3-0.
After the weekend action, the Wheat Kings sit with a 28-21-5-1 record and are two points behind the Broncos for first place in the Eastern Division.
Lisoway watch: After the two games over the weekend, Lisoway now has six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 52 games.
Farmers make playoffs
The Neepawa Farmers have clinched a playoff spot in the Tiger Hills Hockey League.
The Farmers defeated the Swan Lake Cougars 7-3 on Saturday night in Neepawa and followed that up with a 5-2 victory over the Pilot Mound Pilots on Sunday at the Yellowhead Centre. The two victories mean Neepawa will finish one point ahead of the Glenboro Nordics for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.
The Farmers will now take on the Pilots in a first round best-of-three series.
Carey wins bronze at Scotties
Manitoba's Chelsea Carey won the bronze medal game 7-3 over Saskatchewan's Stefanie Lawton at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts national women's curling championship in Montreal.
Carey scored two in the eighth end to take a 4-3 lead, then stole three in the 10th en route to the win.
Meanwhile, Rachel Homan's Canada team defeated Val Sweeting's Alberta rink 8-6 to win her second consecutive Scotties title on Sunday night.
Chiefs to face Lightning in tiebreaker; Wheat Kings clinch top spot
The Yellowhead Chiefs will be playing in a tiebreaker on Tuesday night in Shoal Lake to determine who takes the final playoff spot in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
The Chiefs were able to make that happen after going 2-1 in three games over the weekend to wrap up their regular season. The Chiefs defeated the host Parkland Rangers 6-4 on Friday night in Dauphin and followed that up with a 3-1 home loss to the Kenora Thistles in Shoal Lake. The Chiefs then edged the Pembina Valley Hawks 3-2 at home on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Brandon AAA Wheat Kings have clinched top spot in the standings, finishing the regular season with a 39-3-0-2 record, good for 80 points, which was four points better than the second place Winnipeg Wild.

BU review: women's volleyball team clinches second place
The Brandon University Bobcats women's volleyball team was able to secure second place in the Canada West standings over the weekend.
The Bobcats defeated the University of Calgary Dinos in straight sets on Friday and Saturday night and finished with an impressive 17-5 regular season record.
The Bobcats will now host a first round best-of-three playoff series beginning Thursday at the Healthy Living Centre against the UBC-Okanagan Heat.
Meanwhile, the BU men's volleyball team will advance to the playoffs after finishing 1-1 over the weekend against Calgary (10-12 overall record).
BU however got some outside help as a win by the Saskatchewan Huskies over the Mount Royal Cougars was enough to give BU the seventh and final playoff spot.
The BU men's team will now hit the road for he opening round of the playoffs as they take on the UBC Thunderbirds in a best-of-three quarterfinal series. The winner of that moves on to Canada West Final Four at Trinity Western University.
Turning to basketball, the BU women's basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and now sit with a 6-14 conference record. The BU men's team meanwhile, dropped both of their games and sit with a 5-15 mark.
The BU basketball teams finish the regular season on the road this upcoming weekend against the Regina Cougars.
Jets fall to Blues in shootout
The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
Mark Scheifele scored twice, while Dustin Byfuglien netted the other regulation time goal for the Jets.
Vladimir Tarasenko scored the game winner in the shootout for the Blues.
The Jets dropped to 28-26-6 on the season, but sit only two points back of a wild card spot in the Western Conference.
Canada with five medals thus far at Olympics
Canada is up to five medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
The latest medal came in the men's 1,500 metre short track speed skating event where Charles Hamelin wound up winning gold.
The medal marks his fourth career Olympic medal and first of the 2014 Games. Hamelin is three medals away from becoming the most decorated Canadian Olympian ever.
Another highlight from the Olympics over the weekend saw Justine Dufour-Lapointe and her sister Chloe finish 1-2 respectively in freestyle moguls for Canada.
