The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Kings edge Saints; advance to RBC Cup

The Dauphin Kings didn't win the Western Canada Cup, but the club can take solace in the fact they're still headed to the national junior 'A' hockey championship.

After dropping a 5-4 decision to the SJHL champion Yorkton Terriers in the one-versus-two Western Canada Cup championship final on Saturday, the host Kings were able to rebound on Sunday afternoon, defeating the AJHL champion Spruce Grove Saints 4-3 at Credit Union Place.

Chandler Irvin scored for the game winner for Dauphin, while Dylan Butler, Killarney's Aubrey Chapman and Hudson Morrison of Souris netted the other tallies for the Kings, who secured the second RBC Cup berth at the event with the victory.

Kings starting netminder Jordan Piccolino, who wound up being named the tournament's top goaltender, ended up leaving the game due to an injury. Troy Martyniuk took over and the 16-year-old turned aside 24 of 27 shots he faced, helping the Kings pick up the win.

Tristan Sieben, Corey Chorneyko and Nathan Smith scored for the Saints, who had a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play, but wound up surrendering three unanswered goals to Dauphin in the third period.

Both the Terriers and Kings will now travel to Vernon, B.C. to take part in the RBC Cup, May 10-18.

The Kings roster includes former Neepawa Native Brayden Cuthbert, who ended up finishing in a tie for sixth overall in scoring at the event (one goal, six points).

The Terriers roster meanwhile, includes Russell product Derek Falloon, who ended up getting injured during the event. Yorkton is led behind the bench by Trent Cassan, who is from Medora.

Brent Wold of the Kings was named the tournament MVP, finishing the Western Canada Cup with six goals and 11 points in six games.

BU Bobcats women's basketball team adds recruit

The Brandon University Bobcats women’s basketball team announced late Friday afternoon the addition of college transfer Kylee Howard to the roster for next season.

Howard, a 5-foot-8 guard from Regina, Sask., is transferring to BU from Medicine Hat College.

“Kylee is a student of the game and I believe that she can effectively run the offence and keep us organized at the offensive end,” said Bobcats coach Novell Thomas in a release.

“With Kylee’s experience at the post-secondary level, she proved to be a threat from the three point line. I’m looking forward to working with her as she is extremely keen and eager to be a contributor," he continued.

Howard is a graduate of Regina’s Balfour Collegiate where she played with former Bobcat Maegan MacKay. Howard brings experience after starting all 21 of the Medicine Hat Rattlers games last year, leading the team in three-pointers.

“I honestly didn’t know too much about Brandon University before, but after visiting the school and talking with Novell, I’ve definitely made the right decision,” said Howard. “I’m really looking forward to meeting new people and having the opportunity to play university basketball. Playing university basketball has been a goal of mine, so I hope to make the most of it.”
