Cubs fall to Mavericks in Santa Clara season opener

A bottom of the seventh sacrifice fly clinched the Minnedosa Mavericks a 3-2 win over the Neepawa Cubs on opening night of the Santa Clara Baseball League.

Bryce Stephenson picked up the win on the mound for the Mavericks on Wednesday, May 17, recording the final six outs, including three strikeouts. Cole Krutkewich took the loss for the Cubs (0-1), in a relief role, allowing two runs over three innings with two strikeouts.

Elsewhere around the league on opening night, the defending champions, the Portage Padres beat the Plumas Pirates 6-4, the Ebb and Flow Lakers defeated the Dauphin Brewers 6-5 and the Carberry Royals held off a late game rally from the Austin A’s, to collect a 10-7 victory.

A few days later, Plumas picked up their first win with a dominant 9-2 effort over Ebb and Flow, and then followed that up with an 8-2 decision over Austin on Tuesday, May 23, to improve their overall regular season record to 2-1. 

As for the Neepawa Cubs, they returned to action on Wednesday, May 24, with their home opener versus Portage. The final results from that matchup were not available before the Neepawa Banner’s publication deadline, but will appear in next week’s edition.
