The Rivers Banner

Last week’s Rivers Banner reported rugby teams from Elton/Rivers (boys) and Minnedosa (a divisional female squad) were competing in semifinal play for the chance to participate in provincial championships.

The front page story announced games on May 23 (girls) and 24 (boys). The four-year-old Elton/Rivers rugby team was excited to make it to its first ever semifinal round but they were not quite strong enough to advance to provincial playoffs; one parent reports it a “bittersweet night.” Although our local students had twice defeated Crocus Plains in pre-season and league play, the Plainsmen were seeking revenge. Their hunger was satisfied with a halftime score of 10-5 and a final victory of 34-17. Elton/Rivers did close the gap to 20-17 but some “silly mistakes” and “untimely penalties,” says coach Shawn Sarkonak, and extreme wind are ultimately to blame for the loss.

On the girls’ side of things, Minnedosa Chancellors won the Westman High School League championship for the second time since formation in 2003; the first win was in 2014. After defeating Vincent Massey 74-5 at semifinal play on Tuesday, May 23, they met Dauphin Clippers in Souris during the final competition on May 27. Chancellors came out with a score of 36-24, maintaining their perfect record of seven wins, no losses and no ties. This Rolling River School Division team is in Winnipeg this weekend for competition in provincials; see the picture for the team roster.
