Rivers Comets are heading into the stretch drive of the South West Baseball League schedule and had themselves a busy time with three games this past week. They first faced Oak River Dodgers on Thursday, June 15 in a make up game for a second rained-out game scheduled the night prior. Despite an outstanding complete game pitching performance from Ryan Shaw, Dodgers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of seventh off a sacrifice fly; this edged out the Comets by a score of 2-1. Aaron Tycoles had a pair of hits to pace the offence at this game in Oak River.

Going back-to-back nights the first time this season, Comets returned home to play our divisional opponent, Reston Rockets. Rivers rode a nine-run second inning to put the game out of reach early; Cody Nolan did his part to limit damage over his 6 1/3 innings pitched as Comets won by a score of 11-6. Gerald Kuculym and Brad Roth each hit two-run home runs while the whole roster helped carry the momentum with timely base hits and strong at-bats.

After a day off on Saturday, Dodgers made their return trip to Rivers in a Father’s Day faceoff in front of a large crowd. Despite keeping it close early, Dodgers picked up steam after starting pitcher Dana McNish left the game; Oak River cruised to an 11-4 win over Rivers. McNish lasted four innings, striking out one and giving up four runs, only two which were earned. Brandon Lockerby went two for four in the loss, which dropped the Comets record to 4-6 which is fourth place in the six-team North division.

Coming up this week, Comets hit the road for a game against Elkhorn Expos on Wednesday, June 21 before three games next week to edge towards the end of the regular season. On Tuesday, June  27 Comets head to Reston to play the Rockets and then return home on Wednesday, June 28 to meet up with Elkhorn in their second game vs. the Expos. On Friday, June 30 we go on our longest road trip of the year as we have a date down south against Deloraine Royals. Game times are 7 p.m.

Thank-you to all who have come out to support us so far this season, volunteered in some capacity, donated back 50/50 winnings and attended our beer gardens on Father’s Day! It is much appreciated.
