By Trevor PetersOn the weekend of Mar. 2-4, Rivers Jets atom girls team travelled to Swan Lake to take part in the provincial C tournament. There was a total nine teams from all over Manitoba  participating in this event. Their first game was Friday morning against Altona; the girls played very well and came out with a 5-0 victory. Austyn Peters was in net and earned the shutout. Jordyn Veitch was named player of the game for Rivers.

On Saturday the team went up against a very good team from Rat River.  The girls again all came out skating hard and forcing the play, causing the opposition to cough up the puck at key times.  Some timely goals and key saves and the girls came out on top again, winning 5-3. Player of that game was Austyn Peters.

After the dust settled, the girls ended up going 2-0 in round robin play and placing second out of the nine teams, using a goals for/against scoring system. The way the draw worked out, the girls played Rat River again on Sunday morning in the semi-finals. Rat River came out flying, looking for revenge on the earlier loss, but our girls were up to the challenge. Again, an aggressive forecheck and strong back checking allowed Rivers Jets to come out on top, 4-1. Calle Peters was player of the game for this matchup and their victory sent them to the finals at 5 p.m.

In the finals, Rivers met Elkhorn Canadians, whom they had faced four times during the year prior to the tournament, going two and two. Elkhorn came out flying, getting two quick goals to lead at the end of the first period. Rivers fought back in the second period, but the score was 3-2 with Elkhorn still holding the lead after two full periods. In the third, the girls again, like they had done all weekend, dug deep, found an extra gear and scored a couple quick goals to take the lead 4-3 with seven minutes left in the game! Unfortunately, Elkhorn got a couple lucky bounces and a couple quick goals to take back the lead, 5-4. With one minute left in the game, Rivers pulled its goalie to get an extra attacker. Jets had lots of chances in that time but unfortunately, couldn’t get the tieing goal. With her first goal of the season, Jordan Woloski (aka Wally) was named player of the game.

Our local girls played their best hockey of the year that weekend and came home proud recipients of silver medals.  These girls have come such a long way in a short time; a lot of them have only been playing hockey for two years. The improvement that has come in those two short years will only continue to grow, and as they continue to improve, so will their record.  Congratulations, girls!
