Last week we had the first uninterrupted week of Rivers Comets action of the season as the team took on Joe Beeverz Young Guns and Brandon Marlins.

On Wednesday, June 8 Comets and Young Guns played to a 3-3 tie in a defensive pitching duel. Buddy Mayert tossed a gem in his debut on the mound but was left with a no decision in his six-plus innings of work. Mayert allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) while walking two and striking out four before giving way to Michael McFadden who pitched the seventh. At the plate Jody Anderson wound up going two for three with a triple; Justin Froese went one for two with a double and a walk while scoring a run.

In their second game of the week, on June 10, Comets couldn’t muster enough offence as they lost a nail-biter to the Marlins by a score of 3-2. Ryan Shaw turned in a quality start in the loss, striking out seven batters over five innings while allowing three runs, two of which were unearned. Cody Nolan came in to relieve Shaw in the bottom of the sixth and struck out two in his inning of work. Kyle Kostesky led the charge offensively, driving in both Rivers runs in the top of six while going two for three on the night. Dana McNish and Alastair McFadden also added a pair of hits each in the loss.

Looking to get back to their winning ways, Comets matched up with a familiar foe on Tuesday June 14 — Canadian Tire Cardinals. In a great character performance, Comets rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to overcome the Cards by a score of 7-5. Kyle Kostesky earned the win, pitching three shutout innings in relief of starter Mike McFadden. Kostesky struck out three and walked one. At the dish, Aaron Tycoles drove in two runs, as did Alastair McFadden, who socked a bases-loaded ground rule double in part of a five-run fourth inning for the Comets. Layne Anderson also did some heavy lifting, finishing up with a double in a two-for-three night at the plate. Our regular season record now sits at two wins, one loss and one tie in four games this year. Comets are taking on Brandon Midget AAA Knights on Thursday June 16, although game results are unavailable upon publication date.

Action next week for the Comets will be Tuesday, June 21 against  Brandon Cubs at Sumner Field and Thursday, June 23 against Cardinals at Andrews Field; both games are at 7 pm.
