River Comets top Cubs, tie Cardinals

On June 23, Ryan Shaw took the hill in a game against Canadian Tire Cardinals. After the teams exchanged early runs, the pitchers took over and deadlocked in a 3-3 final score. Shaw went seven strong innings, striking out six Cardinal batters. Darren Whelpton had an RBI double for the Comets at the plate.
Looking to rebound from a lacklustre effort in mid-June, Comets had a rematch with Brandon Cubs on June 27. Mike McFadden turned in a stalwart performance on the mound and plate, as the Comets declawed the Cubs by a score of 7-0. McFadden threw a complete game shutout, striking out seven batters while only surrendering three hits. He also added a pair of RBI singles in the game. Justin Froese helped cap off a five-run first inning with two RBIs The win improved the Comets’ record to 4-2-2 on the year.
A game on June 29 vs. Joe Beeverz Young Guns was postponed due to heavy rainfall. Comets opened their new home diamond with a bang on fair night, July 6; results of this Wednesday evening game were not known by the publication deadline of Tuesday at 5 p.m. If you missed us, be sure to stop by tonight, Friday July 8 when we once again face the Cardinals; we play our third game in Rivers on Sunday, July 10 (vs. Young Guns).
