A Neepawa golfer has been selected to play in the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games. Daly Chartrand will be a member of Team Westman at the games, which are to be held in Steinbach Aug. 8-10.
The golfing portion of the event will involve 36 holes played over two days at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club and feature seven teams, composed of four boys and four girls. The scoring for the team competition will be best three out of four scores for boys and best two out of four for the girls.
For Chartrand, this will be his second Manitoba Summer Games. He said the first time, he was more focused on the experience as a whole. But this time, Chartrand noted that he is going into the competition with a different, more focused, mindset.
“I have some expectations on how I should finish. I know if I play my best over those few days, I should be able to make a strong showing. Leading up to the games, I’m just concentrating on what I have control over,” said Chartrand. “My dad always tells me ‘Play each hole [one] at a time. Don’t focus on the end, when it’s just the first hole.’ It’s just important to face the challenge that’s in front of you at that moment, and the rest will follow.”
The 15-year-old, who first took up the game of golf when he was just six years old, has participated in competitive events since age 12. Chartrand said that the challenge of competitive play has helped to develop his game.
“It’s helped to improve the mental part of the game. I’ve learned that you can’t be out on the course trying to beat your competitors, but rather to play to beat the course,” said Chartrand.
The Power Smart Manitoba Games are the province’s largest ongoing multi-sport program. The games are held every two years and alternate between summer and winter sports events. Each set of games involve upwards of 7,500 athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.
