Nursery school begins Sept. 8

Classes begin at Rivers Kids Club nursery school on Monday, Sept. 8 in the basement of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Rivers. According to the registrations accepted in June, enrolment is between 45 and 50, with three-year-olds attending from 9-11:30 a.m., followed by four-year-olds from 12:30-3 p.m.  Tuesday and Thursday; combined classes will be Monday and Wednesday. 

The nursery school was founded in 1973 by Vicki Broughton and continued to be taught by her until her death in 2005. Due to an increase in enrolment, the space in the basement of Rivers United Church was no longer adequate, so classes were moved to the Catholic church a few years ago. 

The teacher for the past six years has been Calinda Moran; she is assisted by staff members Heather Gray and Vimy Vencappa. The school executive consists of Jackie Howard as president, Taryn Cords as vice-president, Crystal Kasprick as secretary and Pam Jubinville as treasurer. Three members at large are Melissa Klassen, Sherri Swayze and Betty MacDonald. This group sets policy and arranges fundraising. Nutritional snacks are paid by means of a provincial enhancement grant.

The school suffered damage from flooding this summer, so has been actively fundraising to replace lost equipment. Rivers and Area Lions Club has held two barbecues for them, the latest on Friday, Aug. 29. Burgers, hot dogs, French fries and drinks were served  on Rivers Home Hardware property. Although there was no head count taken, this event was well attended — 180 burgers were sold, 72 hot dogs, two cases of chips and a large quantity of pop, all within a two-hour span at dinner time.
