It was a busy Thanksgiving weekend in local sports. Here is a look-back on what transpired . . .

Natives fall to Terriers, defeat Blues at MJHL Showcase

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League held its ninth annual Showcase Weekend recently.

There were 11 games in total that took place at the MTS Iceplex. The Neepawa Natives played in two contests and were able to come away from the event with a 1-1 record.

The Natives lost to the Portage Terriers 4-0 on Friday afternoon, but rebounded with a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Blues on Saturday.

Wheat Kings win, lose

The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings lost to the Portland Winterhawks on Friday night, but were able to rebound with a victory on Saturday against the Red Deer Rebels.

Alex Shoenborn's first career WHL goal snapped a 1-1 tie with just under eight minutes remaining in the second period on Friday as Portland edged the Wheat Kings 2-1 at Westman Communications Group Place.

Richard Nejezchleb scored the lone goal for Brandon in a losing cause.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Ryan Pulock celebrated his 18th birthday by scoring two goals, helping the host Wheat Kings defeat Red Deer by a score of 2-1.

Corbin Boes stopped 22 shots in Brandon's net as the Wheat Kings improved to 5-2-0-0 on the season.

Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League regular season underway; Chiefs undefeated

The regular season began on Friday night in the Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Yellowhead Chiefs' first game of the season was against the Southwest Cougars in Shoal Lake.

Shawn Bowles scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift the Chiefs over the Cougars 2-1.

Meyer Neil replied for the Cougars.

The Chiefs continued their winning ways on Saturday as the team defeated the Central Plains Capitals 3-1 in Portage.

Brock Paddock scored two goals, while Bradley Bowles netted an empty netter for Yellowhead in the win. Stephen MacKenzie scored the lone goal for the Capitals.

On Sunday, the Chiefs won yet again, defeating Interlake 5-2 in Shoal Lake.

Taylor Sanheim scored two goals, while Tanner Kyle, Nolan Speiss and Brett Orr netted the other tallies for the Chiefs, who now sit with a 3-0-0 record.

Rhett Lough and Chase Faulkner scored the goals for Interlake.

Switzer named player of the week

Brandon Switzer of the Brandon Wheat Kings has been named the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League's West Division player of the week.

Switzer netted four goals and seven points in two games over the weekend.


RMFL: Neepawa defeats Moosomin

The Neepawa Tigers defeated the Moosomin Generals 45-6 on Friday afternoon in Rural Manitoba Football League action.

Brenden Cowan carried the ball seven times for 124 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers in the win. Rylin Mitchler also had a 35-yard touchdown run for Neepawa.

The Tigers' defence produced three sacks and two fumble recoveries in the win.

Neepawa improved to 2-3 on the season.

Vikings defeat Marauders

The Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Maples Marauders 47-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Brandon-based high school improved to 4-1 in the Winnipeg High School Football League and sit in a tie for second place in the Kas Vidruk Division.

Meanwhile, Brandon's Neelin High School defeated the Fort Frances Muskies 19-6. With the win, the team improved its Andy Currie Division record to 4-1.

Wolverines qualify for playoffs

The Westman Wolverines qualified for the playoffs in the Manitoba Major Football League.

Virden's Shayne Sebree ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Wolverines defeat the Greendell Falcons 32-10 on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines finished the regular season in fifth place with a 4-4 record and will
travel to take on the St. James Rods next Saturday in a quarter-final contest.

Idonije helps Bears improve to 4-1

Brandon's Israel Idonije had two tackles, helping the NFL's Chicago Bears defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-3 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bears improved to 4-1 and are in a tie with the Minnesota Vikings for first place in the NFC North.

First Manitoba Curling Tour event wraps up

The first event of the Manitoba Curling Tour wrapped up over the long weekend.

Daley Peters defeated Bob Sigurdson 6-2 in the final of the Nott Autocorp Thanksgiving Charity Open in Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, on the World Curling Tour, Jeff Stoughton won the 2012 StuSells Toronto Tankard, while Kevin Martin took home the Westcoast Curling Classic in New Westminster, B.C.

On the women's side, Sherry Middaugh won the Autumn Gold Curling Classic in Calgary.

Bombers win

Manitoba's CFL team got its first road win of the season on Monday.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Montreal Alouettes 27-22.

Bombers' quarterback Joey Elliott threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns in the win, helping Winnipeg improve to 4-10 on the year.

Wildcats lose opener

The Westman Wildcats travelled to Portage on Friday night to take on the Central Plains Capitals in their Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League regular season opener.

The Wildcats wound up losing 1-0 to the Capitals as Sheridan Oswald netted the lone goal for the Capitals in the contest.
