The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings started their regular season on a winning note on Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.  A power play goal by Jens Meilleur four minutes into the third period was the difference as the Wheat Kings went on to defeat the visiting Regina Pats 3-2 in the opening game of a season opening home-and-home series between the two teams.  Veteran defenceman Eric Roy and rookie Taylor Cooper also scored for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Pats 33-29.

Neepawa product Quintin Lisoway made his debut as a member of the Wheat Kings and was able to get in on the scoring action with an assist on Cooper's tally.  Dyson Stevenson and Morgan Klimchuk replied for the Pats.  Wheat Kings' veteran netminder Corbin Boes turned aside 27 shots for the win, while Matt Hewitt made 30 saves in a losing effort for the Pats.  Dwayne Gylywoychuk picked up his first win as Wheat Kings' head coach. The 39-year old Winnipeg product was named the club's new bench boss in August, replacing Cory Clouston who was let go after last season.
