The Neepawa Knights of Columbus council has a long history in the community and thanks to an influx of new members, a bright future. “We’re growing by leaps and bounds… We’ve been quite surprised,” said grand knight Mark Moorehouse.

With close to 100 members, Moorehouse said that membership in the Catholic men’s organization has more than doubled since last June when they had 42 members.

Moorehouse credits most of the growth in membership to newcomers from the Philippines. “A lot of Filipinos are getting involved with the church and helping in the community,” he said. He added that being a member of Knights of Columbus is considered an honour in the Philippines.

The growth of Neepawa’s council makes them one of the fastest growing council in the province.  Moorehouse said they are close to surpassing Brandon in terms of membership.

The influx of young, energetic, enthusiastic members with new ideas has Moorehouse optimistic about their ability to do more charitable work in the community. “More hands ease the work load,” he said.

Knights of Columbus is a service group that assists the needy not just within the church, but the community as a whole.  Most of their activities benefit families, especially children. Moorehouse said that activities include providing winter coats to children, purchasing wheelchairs and sponsoring children who want to attend sporting events such as camps.

The organization is open to men who are members of the Catholic church. Anyone interested in more information can contact Moorehouse or St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church.
