Schreyer nets hat-trick as Blues defeat Natives

The Neepawa Natives lost their fifth game in a row on Wednesday night in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action.

Joel Schreyer netted a hat-trick, helping the Winnipeg Blues rout the Natives 8-2 at the Yellowhead Centre.

In the first period, the Blues scored three goals off the sticks of Schreyer, Warren Callis and Kamerin Nault before Clayton Heindrichs was able to get Neepawa on the board.

The Blues responded with four unanswered tallies in the second as Nault, Clay Tait, Schreyer and Ben Sveinson scored to give Winnipeg a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Schreyer would complete the hat-trick in the third before Steven Phillips would score for Neepawa.

Byron Spriggs made 16 stops to pick up the win in net for Winnipeg, while Matt Young and Matt Kohlman combined to make 34 saves between the pipes for the Natives, who were outshot on the night 42-18.

With the win, the Blues improved to 18-11-5 this season. The Natives meanwhile, dropped to 9-23-4 and remain eight points behind the OCN Blizzard for fourth place in the Sher-Wood Division.

The Natives play again on Thursday night when they travel to Dauphin to battle the Kings.
