Weekend sports wrap: Kings remain undefeated at RBC Cup

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

RBC Cup underway; Kings remain undefeated

The RBC Cup national junior 'A' hockey championship got underway over the weekend in Vernon, B.C.

The Dauphin Kings, the MJHL representative at the event, remains undefeated after winning both of their games over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Kings won their first game, defeating the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots 2-1.

Killarney product Jesse Bernard scored the game winner with less than two minutes to go in the third period, while Tanner Butler of Souris netted the other tally for Dauphin in the win.

Michael Stiliadis stopped 41 shots between the pipes for the Kings.

On Sunday, Brent Wold scored the game winner as the Kings defeated the Carleton Place Canadians 4-3 in overtime.

Killarney product Jesse Bernard scored twice for the Kings, while Dylan Butler netted the other tally for Dauphin in the victory.

Michael Stiliadis made 31 saves in net for the Kings.

The Kings roster includes former Neepawa Native Brayden Cuthbert.

Dauphin takes on the host Vernon Vipers on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the SJHL champion Yorkton Terriers, led by head coach Trent Cassan of Medora, lost their opening game over the weekend by a score of 5-1 to the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots.

Winterhawks force a Game 7

The Portland Winterhawks have forced a Game 7 in the Western Hockey League championship final series against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Winterhawks came back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat the Oil Kings 6-5 in overtime. Keegan Iverson scored the game winner for Portland, as they host the Oil Kings in the seventh and deciding contest on Monday night.

Tigers fall to Virden

The Neepawa Tigers dropped a 5-1 decision to the Virden Golden Bears on Sunday in Prairie West High School Baseball League action.

The Tigers currently sit with a 1-2 record overall and are tied for fourth in the North Division. Vincent Massey sits in first place with a 4-0 mark.

Meanwhile, in the South Division, Virden is all alone in first with a 3-0 record.

MSBL schedule released; Farmers to battle Oak River in opener

The Manitoba Senior Baseball League released its schedule for the upcoming season.

The Neepawa Farmers will travel to Oak River to battle the Dodgers on Tuesday, May 27 in what will be the regular season opener.

The other three teams will begin their respective seasons on Friday, May 30 as the defending champion Reston Rockets will host the Brandon Cloverleafs, while the Brandon Marlins will visit Oak River.

Each team will play a 20-game regular season, which lasts until July 13, with playoffs beginning soon afterwards.

NHL playoffs: Rangers avoid elimination

The New York Rangers avoided elimination in the NHL playoffs on Sunday after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in Game 6 of their second round series. Martin St. Louis scored for the Rangers, who tied the series at three games apiece.

Meanwhile, Manitoba's own Jonathan Toews scored the game winner in the third period as the Chicago Blackhawks edged the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in Game 5 of their series on Sunday. The Hawks now have a 3-2 lead in the series.

Meanwhile, the Boston Bruins will look to close out their series against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. The Bruins lead that series 3-2, while the LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks will play Game 5 of their series, which is currently locked at two games apiece.

Although these happenings took place on Thursday, it's worth noting . . .

 

BU Bobcats women's volleyball team add recruit

The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team announced its final recruit for the 2014-15 season.

Winnipeg product Kayla Solomon has committed to the Bobcats and will be the first music student to play volleyball at BU.

Solomon, who stands 6-feet tall and has experience at both outside and middle, is a soon-to-be graduate of Collège Jeanne-Sauvé where she was team captain her senior year.


Bauman released

The CFL's Calgary Stampeders have released Brandon product Chris Bauman.

The wide receiver who is now a free agent ended up missing the entire 2013 season due to two injuries – one of which he suffered in training camp and the other in October.

Bauman was selected first overall by the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the 2007 CFL Draft. He joined the Edmonton Eskimos in 2011 and then signed with the Stampeders in 2012.


Canada and USA battle to 1-1 tie

The Canadian national women's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the United States in a friendly exhibition match at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg on Thursday night.

More than 28,000 people took in the game which saw Kadeisha Buchanan score what was her first ever goal as a member of the Canadian squad in the first half with a header off a corner kick. The United States would respond however as Sydney Leroux would tie the game at the 78 minute mark.

CWE event takes place in Neepawa

The Yellowhead Centre hosted a night of professional wrestling on Thursday as the Canadian Wrestling Elite "Last Action Hero Tour" was in Neepawa.

Approximately 100 wrestling fans from the area witnessed a card which included several matches, such as WWE/NXT star Chris Hero, the "Knock Out Artist", defeating CWE champion Heavy Metal by disqualification. Meanwhile, the "Zombie Hunter" Mentallo pinned Sigmon to advance in the Elite Eight Tournament. Another match saw the "Hotshot" Danny Duggan battle "The Gift" Jason Kincaid in what ended up being a no contest after outside interference.
