Weekend sports wrap: Natives draft Marshall first overall at MJHL Bantam Draft

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
Natives draft Marshall first overall; acquire veteran goaltender
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League Bantam Draft took place on Sunday in Winkler and the Neepawa Natives were busy with five picks in total, including the first selection overall.
With the first pick, the Natives opted for forward Bradley Marshall of Ste. Rose.
Marshall played for the Parkland Rangers of the Winnipeg AAA Bantam Division 1 League this past season, scoring 29 goals and 50 points in 32 games.
In the second round, the Natives selected forward Austin Nault of Winnipeg. Nault, listed at 6-foot-1, spent this past season with the Winnipeg Warriors Bantam Division 1 team, where he netted 15 goals and 29 points in 32 games.
Bruce selected by Pistons; Jubinville goes to Winkler
The Steinbach Pistons held the second pick overall in the draft and wound up selecting blueliner Riley Bruce from Winnipeg; the Winkler Flyers opted for defence man Tyler Jubinville of Gilbert Plains with the third pick.
The Pistons held the fourth overall selection and chose forward Vaughn Dupre, while the Swan Valley Stampeders took blue liner Dane Hirst of Lac du Bonnet with the fifth pick.

Neepawa athletes perform well at provincial track and field championship
Several members of the Neepawa Collegiate track team came away with medals at the provincial high school track and field championship, which wrapped up in Winnipeg over the weekend.
Dillan Neufeld won a silver medal in the varsity boys discus; Amy Todoruk ended up with a bronze in the 
varsity girls tetrathlon event, while Logan Young won a bronze in the varsity boys 3000-metre.
Other winners saw Cole Tardiff win a bronze medal in the varsity boys high jump, while the varsity boys 4x100-metre relay team, which consists of Lynden Middleton, Rylin Mitchler, Bryson Kaye and Wyatt Salmon ended up with a silver medal performance.
Meanwhile, Justin Krantz of Roblin won a gold medal in the varsity boys shot put. His toss of 15.77 metres broke the provincial record, which was set two years ago by Curtis Urnezius of Winnipeg.
Another gold medal winner from Westman was Caitlin Wilkinson of Ste. Rose, who finished in first place in the varsity girls high jump.
Other notable medal winners from Westman include Boissevain’s Nathan Arde, who took home a silver medal in the junior varsity boys javelin, while Baldur’s Chelsea Dearsley won a bronze in the varsity girls discus.
MSBL: Farmers fall to Marlins, Cloverleafs
The struggles continue for the Neepawa Farmers early this season in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League.
On Friday night, the Brandon Cloverleafs scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 11-5 win over the Farmers.
Mason Schiff had three hits, including a double and three RBI for the ’Leafs in the win.
Anthony Friesen picked up the win on the mound for Brandon, pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight batters.
Garrett Rempel took the loss on the bump for Neepawa, allowing 11 runs in a complete game effort.
Rob Wilson had a home run in the contest, driving in two runs for the Farmers in the loss.
On Sunday, Ty Webber drove in two runs and scored two runs himself as the Brandon Marlins defeated the Farmers 8-2 in Neepawa.
Eric Zamrykut also had a solo home run for the Marlins, who received a complete game on the mound from Sam McNeise, who gave up six hits and striking out eight batters for Brandon.
Farmers pitcher Josh Loewen took the loss as he was charged with four runs on six hits, while striking out five in six innings.
Torey Scott had a solo blast for the Farmers, who now sit with a 1-4 record.
Kings with two-game lead in Stanley Cup final
The Los Angeles Kings have a two-game lead in the Stanley Cup final over the New York Rangers.
The Kings defeated the Rangers 5-4 in overtime on Saturday and will look to take a commanding three game lead in the best-of-seven NHL championship final on Monday night in New York.
Tentative deal reached
The Canadian Football League and the CFL Players Association reached a tentative agreement late Saturday night.
The agreement averted a potential players strike, and if ratified, would mean five years of labour peace.
A date to hold a ratification vote has yet to be announced.
The CFL will have preseason games beginning on Monday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host the Toronto Argonauts.
