Neepawa athletes take part in Special Olympics Canada Summer Games

Two Neepawa athletes were members of Team Manitoba at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which wrapped up on Saturday in Vancouver.

Keith Jacobson and Laurie Goodon competed in five-pin bowling and both helped their respective teams win bronze in the team bowling event.

Jacobson, 53, and Goodon, 52, have both been part of Special Olympics Manitoba for three years and this was their first time they’ve participated in the Canada Summer Games.

“The main thing with the five-pin bowling teams is that they had a ton of fun,” said Steven Dreger, manager of communications and media relations for Team Manitoba. “There was a lot of cheering going on from all of bowlers.”

Other Westman-related results included the Manitoban 10-pin bowlers Melvin Gensiorek, who won two bronze medals in the team and doubles events, Natalie Simmons, who won a bronze in the singles event, while Ashley Batt took home a silver medal in the doubles event.

In soccer, Manitoba wound up winning gold as the club went undefeated throughout the event. While in softball, Team Manitoba won a silver medal after losing in the gold medal game to Ontario by a score of 8-7.

In golfing, Tammy Lumax and Danny Peaslee both won medals. Lumax picked up a silver, scoring a 75, 68 and 74, while Peaslee won bronze, scoring a 45, 47 and 41. Peaslee is now preparing to compete in the Special Olympics World Golf Invitational in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Team Manitoba, which consisted of 91 athletes who competed in 11 different sports, wound up coming away with 76 medals in total.
