The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
Pembina Hills, Bonvital win provincial baseball titles
The Pembina Hills Padres and the Bonivital Blacksox took home provincial baseball championship titles at the Simplot Millennium Park in Brandon over the weekend.
The Padres, which includes Carberry’s Bryden Biehn, defeated South Central 8-3 in the peewee AAA championship final. With the win, Pembina Hills will now advance to the Western Canadian championship, Aug. 14-18 in Altona.
Meanwhile, the Bonvital Blacksox defeated the Winnipeg South Chiefs 4-1 in the bantam AAA provincial championship final. The Blacksox will now move on to the bantam nationals, which will take place Aug. 21-25 in Vaughan, Ont.
Tuttosi named to Canadian under-20 rugby squad
Souris product Emily Tuttosi has been named to the Canadian under-20 women’s rugby squad for an upcoming two-game series against the United States.
The games will take place in London and Sarnia on Aug. 20 and 23.
Tuttosi is a member of the Calgary Dinos university girls rugby squad and was a former rugby standout with the Souris Sabres girls high school rugby team.
Tuttosi and Minnedosa’s Breanne Morgan were also members of the Prairie team that recently took part in the National Women’s League tournament in Ottawa.
MSBL championship final slated to get underway
The Manitoba Senior Baseball League championship final is set to begin tonight in Brandon between both Wheat City clubs.
Game 1 of the best-of-seven championship series between the Brandon Cloverleafs and Brandon Marlins is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Andrews Field.
The Cloverleafs, who finished in first place after the regular season with a 16-4 record, swept the Neepawa Farmers in a best-of-five semifinal to advance to the final, while the Marlins, who finished in second place with a 15-4-1 record, swept the Reston Rockets in the other semifinal.
MJHL trade
There was a trade in the MJHL on Friday.
The Steinbach Pistons have traded the CJHL playing rights of 20-year-old forward Ryan Edevold to the Dauphin Kings for the MJHL list rights of 16-year-old forward Jermaine Loewen.
Paddock expected to be named head coach of Pats
Oak River product John Paddock is expected to be named the new head coach of the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats.
According to a report from the Regina Leader Post, Paddock will also have a role in the Pats’ hockey operations department as well.
Paddock has spent several years as a coach in the NHL. He most recently was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Paddock will replace Malcolm Cameron, who was fired by the Pats late June.
Wytinck has solid first day
Glenboro’s Josh Wytinck had a solid first day at the Canadian amateur men’s golf championship in Winnipeg.
Wytinck shot a 5-under-par 67 on Monday at the Southwood Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg. He sat one shot off the lead after Monday’s action.
