MJHL announces award nominees

The nominees for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s six major awards have been announced. Not surprisingly, four members of the Portage Terriers, the number one ranked team in the CJHL have been nominated for awards.
MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis said the winners will be announced shortly, with the players being honoured at a home game later this month.
“Each nominee should be extremely proud of their accomplishment and their excellence on the ice,” Davis said. “The MJHL member clubs nominated players in each of the award categories. The voting for each award was done entirely by the head coaches.”
The three nominees for the MVP Award, known as the Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh Memorial Trophy, are Tristan Keck of the Winkler Flyers, Tanner Jago with the Portage Terriers and Graham Hunt from the Swan Valley Stampeders.
For Rookie of the year, Dylan Thiessen of the Virden Oil Capitals, James Shearer from the Steinbach Pistons and Rylee Zimmer with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, will vie for the Vince Leah Trophy.
The Lorne “Windy” Lyndon Memorial Trophy honours players for hockey ability and sportsmanship. The three players up for that prize are Virden’s Soren Frederiksen, Brad Bowles of Portage and Jackson Keane with the Winnipeg Blues.
The nominees for the top goaltender award are Graham Hunt of Swan Valley, Dasan Sydora from Winkler and Steinbach’s Nick Deery.
The Brian Kozak Memorial Trophy will go to the league’s top defenseman. Tanner Jago of Portage, Ryan Bittner with the Winnipeg Blues and Virden’s Jordan Greig have been singled out for their blue line work this season.
The Coach of the Year prize, also known as the Portage Terriers “Muzz McPherson” Award, features Steinbach bench boss Paul Dyck, Winnipeg’s Don MacGillivray and Portage Terriers coach Blake Spiller.
The MJHL’s other major award, the Mike Ridley Trophy, given to the top scorer in the league will be announced upon the end of the regular season.
