After a busy season, ice sports at Riverdale Community Centre, referred to locally as the rink, have slowed down. There were several hockey tournaments, including a Tournament of Champions. Rivers Jets atoms, Yellowhead Classic, Brandon Husky, Tri-Town Bobcats, female Bantam AAA, hosts for Senior A provincials and a Minor hockey Day celebration. Floor hockey for ages six to 16 is now in the planning stages.
Booked for summer hockey is the Laxdal Hockey School, now in its fourth year, for ages five to 14; it will be held Aug. 3-7. The Corbin Hockey School, also a repeat event, will be Aug. 10-13.
The curling ice schedule ended April 15. This was also a busy season with numerous local bonspiels and a provincial Golden Gals competition. All curling action has been previously reported in past issues of Rivers Banner.
Lynn Bradley has been directing a free exercise class each Monday morning in the upstairs hall.
Recreation director Navi Gill reports several socials have been booked for the rink, as has the Grade 12 graduation ball. A fundraising auction and dance will take place in the rink on July 18; all proceeds will be in aid of a splash park in Rivers. Navi is currently organizing Comets baseball play here on diamonds on the west side of the fairgrounds.
Rink caretaker Brian Mitchell is busy painting the cinder-block walls on the main floor. The white paint brightens the red window framing, which was painted last year.
