Despite Mother Nature’s best effort to cool down the bats of the Neepawa Farmers on Tuesday, July 28, the team was able to overcome the elements on the way to a 7-1 win over the Brandon Marlins. Daylon Creasy lead Neepawa at the plate, going 2-for-3 and getting 4 RBI during the seven inning, rain shortened game. Ian Hockin, Travis Jean and Brady Moxam all added a single RBI to help the Farmers to the win.
During the game, the players found themselves dealing with scattered rain and a strong, gusty wind, making for some difficult playing conditions. There was also a 15 minute delay at the end of the third inning, as the rain became too heavy to continue play. After some initial concern that the game might of be postponed, the weather conditions cleared up enough to continue.
Once play resumed, a solid pitching performance from Josh Loewen, which included allowing only a single run and nine hits over seven innings, helped to keep the Farmers from elimination in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League semi-final matchup. The victory extended to the best of seven series to a sixth game on Wednesday evening in Brandon, which was played after the Banner’s publication deadline. Updates on the game will be published in the August 7 edition of the Neepawa Banner.
Earlier in the series, the Farmers pulled out an 8-6 win at home on Friday, July 24, but were defeated 10-3 by the Marlins on Sunday, July 26 at Andrews Field in Brandon.
In the other MSBL semi-final, the Oak River Dodgers were able to top the Brandon Cloverleafs on Tuesday, July 29, by the score of 6-4. With the win, Oak River took the best of seven series four games to one and have advanced to the league championship for the first time in team history.
As for the Cloverleafs, even though their MSBL season has come to an end, there’s still more baseball for them to play. As the 2014 MSBL champions, they'll play in the Baseball Canada Senior Championship, scheduled for late August in Chatham, New Brunswick.
