It was another impressive week for the Neepawa Farmers, as the team picked up a pair of wins in the Tiger Hills Hockey League.
On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the Farmers went on the road to play the Carberry Plainsmen. The evening ended up being a high-scoring affair, which ended in an amazing win for Neepawa, who came away with a last second 6-5 victory.
Carberry was the first on the board, with Cory Rae scoring at 5:18 in the opening period. At 7:00, Dustin Fisher put the Plainsmen up by two. Thirty-seconds later, Riley Day capitalized on a power-play and stretched Carberry’s lead to three. Neepawa fought back, with Tyler Lazaruk scoring the Farmers’ first goal at 9:28. With just over a minute left in the first, Lance Nugent found the net, bringing Neepawa up to a one point deficit by the end of the period.
The first half of the second period didn’t see much action, but at the 9:34 mark, Clarke Rempel tied things up for Neepawa. At 13:54, Carberry’s Devon Leblanc put the Plainsmen back in the lead on the power-play. Garrett Rempel replied with a Farmers goal at 18:10, sending the teams into the third with an even playing field.
In the final period, Garrett Rempel took advantage of another power-play and found the net for the second time that night at 7:13. Plainsman Devon Leblanc responded at 12:45 with his second point of the evening, to tie them up at 5-5. The battle literally went down to final second, as Garrett Rempel secured a hat-trick and the win at 19:59.
After escaping Carberry with a win, the Farmers returned home to the Yellowhead Centre on Saturday, Nov. 21 and toppled the Pilot Mound Pilots 3-1. The complete game stats from that contest were not available before the publication deadline for the Neepawa Press. That victory for the Farmers was the seventh of the season and helped to ensure the club remained in first place in the THHL eastern division, with a total of 14 points. Neepawa currently leads second place Minnedosa by five points.
The next home game for the Neepawa Farmers will be on Saturday, Nov. 28, versus the defending league champions, the Deloraine Royals. That game also includes a progressive 50/50 in support of Braden Pettinger, the Portage Terriers player who experienced a spinal cord injury in a game against the Winnipeg Blues on Nov. 12. Tickets are available this week at Harris Pharmacy, or by calling Rodney White at (204) 476-6044 or Landon Cameron at (204) 841-3570. The draw will be held after the second intermission of the game on Saturday.
