The Neepawa Farmers were unable to gain any ground on the Carberry Plainsmen this past weekend, as they lost to the Tiger Hills Hockey League’s top team on Saturday, Jan. 16, by the score of 5-0. The game, held at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa, was the Farmers opportunity to take two points from their Eastern Division rivals, but it was not to be.
Zeanan Zimmer and Dustin Fisher scored a pair of goals a piece, why Mike Reykdal notched a single for the visiting Plainsmen.
The loss came on the heels of an impressive road victory for Neepawa, as they defeated the Souris Elks on Friday, Jan. 15, by a margin of 5-3. The Elks scored the first goal of the game, as Hudson Morrison took advantage of an opportunity at the 12:32 mark of the first period. Souris doubled its lead just 12 seconds into the second period with a Carter Suski marker. Neepawa’s Devin Epp replied before the end of the second, but the Farmers still found themselves trailing after 40 minutes of play.
It would be in the third that Neepawa would kick their game up a notch, earning the next three goals of the night. Epp scored his second goal of the evening and 11th of the season to make it 2-2. Lance Nugent and Garett Rempel added goals of their own, before Souris was able to reply. Down one goal with a minute remaining in the third, the Elks pulled their goaltender, hoping the extra attacker would lead to a game tying goal. It was not to be however, as Clarke Rempel potted an empty netter with just five-seconds left in regulation, to make the final score 5-3.
With three games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Farmers have a record of 13-7-1 and are three points back of Carberry in the Eastern Division. The Minnedosa Bombers are a single point back of Neepawa with 26 points, but have three games in hand on the schedule.
