Carberry opens series with dominant win over Farmers

The Carberry Plainsmen steamrolled through most of its competition during the regular season on the way to the best record in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. That domination continued during their first playoff game, as they defeated the Neepawa Farmers 7-3 on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Carberry scored three goals late in the opening period and another pair in the second to have a comfortable 5-0 lead going into the final 20 minutes of regulation. The onslaught continued early in the third, as the Plainsmen added two more goals just seconds apart to make it 7-0.

The Farmers refused to call it a night, however, as they added three goals late in the game to make the score a somewhat more respectable 7-3 margin. Garett Rempel scored a pair while Jeremy Hodgins notched the other. On the other side of the scoresheet, Carberry’s Zeanan Zimmer ended the night with four points (2-2), while Devon Leblanc added a pair of goals and an assist. Other scorers included Dustin Fisher, Brock Sutherland and Jon Gauret.

Both teams returned to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 20, this time in the Yellowhead Centre.

Carberry secures win in second game

Neepawa returned home to the Yellowhead Centre for game two of the best-of-five series on Saturday, Feb. 20. In that game, Carberry was able to score five goals in the second period to secure the 9-4 win.

Zeanan Ziemer once again had a huge night for the Plainsmen, scoring four goals and adding a pair of assists. Keaton Turner also notched a hat trick for Carberry. As for the Farmers, Ian Kerkowich and Lance Nugent each scored a pair for the home team. 

Carberry could advance to the eastern division final with a win in game three on Thursday, Feb. 25. That game will take place at the Sportsplex in Brandon. Opening face-off is at 7:30 pm.
