Sixteen-year-old Haylee Anderson of Rivers was in Mississauga, Ont. May 2-7 to compete in the annual National Aboriginal Hockey Championship (NAHC). As part of Team Manitoba, she and the rest of the roster claimed their second consecutive bronze medal; Haylee’s first NAHC bronze medal was won last year in Halifax.
Team Manitoba finished second in their pool so played against Eastern Door North (Quebec) in the quarterf-inals. A win against Quebec of 6-2 advanced them to semifinal play against Team Ontario. This game was a hard fought battle which resulted in an overtime loss of 3-2. This score put Team Manitoba in the bronze medal game, which they ultimately won, but not without fight. It was another hotly-contested competition, this time with Team BC, but Anderson and her teammates came out on top, following another round of overtime and a final score of 2-1.
Both male and female Manitoba teams are ranked third best of the 11 Canadian provinces — each group brought home NAHC bronze medals.
Haylee has been playing hockey since age four and has been on Tri-Town, Rivers Jets, AAA Yellowhead Chiefs and Manitoba Rebels teams. She has competed at several provincial tournaments as well as the AA North American Hockey Classic.
