With summer in full swing, here are some bicycle safety tips to make all your journeys great.
• Make sure you and your child wear a certified bicycle safety helmet.
• Practice proper road safety skills.
• Supervise your child to ensure they have good riding skills in traffic.
• Keep your bike in good working condition.
• Be visible. Wear bright-coloured clothing so motorists can see you.
• If you’re riding in the evening or at night, ensure you have proper functioning reflectors and a light.
• Make sure your bike fits you right. If you need help, visit a local bike shop.
And remember, in Manitoba it’s the law that cyclists under 18 wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet. Parents or guardians are responsible for making sure children wear a bicycle helmet. Adults can be ticketed under The Highway Traffic Act if they don’t have a helmet on their child; teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 can be fined directly or have to complete a bike helmet safety course.
