Sticks and strings support Linus

The Sticks (needles) and Strings (wools) group is still meeting every second Friday in the basement of St. James’ Anglican Church in Rivers.

The independent group’s next meeting date is March 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m. It’s a friendship, free-of-charge learning group comprised of six to nine (more are welcome) who knit, crochet, quilt, peruse English knitting books, share patterns, and visit.

For the past three years they have made toques, hats and scarves for Manitoba’s north, distributing them on White Sunday and to Christmas Cheer. Some have made shawls and lap warmers for patients at Riverdale Personal Care Home.

Sticks and Strings chose Project Linus Manitoba, an international organization, as a charity. Blankets made for this group range in size to suit children ages six to nine. They are distributed to fire and police departments who give the blankets out in cases of fire, accidents, or to others suffering trauma in their lives, as comfort gifts.

Marlene Robins of Brandon attends Sticks and Strings but her handiworks is donated to Linus. Local co-ordinator of the Linus group is Judy Janzen of Elton district and Val Robertson of Smart Siding is the blanket collector. Cora Champion of Deloraine also serves on the committee. More than 300 small blankets from western Manitoba were collected for the Linus cause last year.
