Rivers Collegiate band receives instruments

Rivers Collegiate band program recently received two instruments, namely an alto saxophone from John and Shirley Russell and a tenor saxophone form John and Dorothy Klassen (parents of principal Mike Klassen). These donated instruments will be well used in years to come. Band members and their teacher Angela Roberts are focusing on their year-end concert on June 7 at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.

Winners in badminton were named in the school’s newsletter, The Rambler, as the following. Owen Wareham and Zach Veitch, Grade 7 boys doubles; McKenzie Kirton, Grade 7 girls singles; Brendan English and Thom Heijmans, Grade 8 boys doubles first place; Hassan Ashraf and Toon Verbruggen Grade 8 boys doubles second place; Hassan, Thom and Brendan took second, third and fourth respectively in boys singles.

A guest speaker from Brandon’s Women’s Shelter addressed all Grade 7-10 students about domestic and dating violence statistics in Manitoba and Canada. Digital bullying is the newest and most common form of power imbalance; in a person’s lifetime most would be a vicitim in a relationship through digital means. “Never type when you are angry, don’t share negative comments or photos about someone else, because posting online is never gone,” she said.

The class of 2015 is looking forward to graduation on Friday, June 19 with ceremonies in the collegiate auditorium at 2 p.m., followed by the evening grand march and banquet in Riverdale Community Centre.
