A total of 38 adult fishing enthusiasts and 11 children aged 12-and-under (who were admitted for free) converged on Jake Fast Park on Saturday, June 20 for the second annual summer fishing derby which was hosted by Rivers and Area Game and Fish Association on Lake Wahtopanah. The 49 competitive fishers hooked a total of 37 fish comprised of 16 walleye, 12 northern pike, three perch and six rock bass. A cash prize of $200 was awarded for the longest fish in each of the four categories; this is the summary of winners: walleye, Perry White, Brandon, 73.7 centimetres (large enough for a Master Angler Award); northern pike, Ian Straker, Minnedosa, 81 centimetres; perch, Trevor Johnston, Rivers, 22.3 centimetres; rock bass, Roger Beaudin, Rivers, 27.5 centimetres (also large enough for a Master Angler Award).
Troy White of Brandon (Perry White’s son) pocketed $135 in a 50/50 draw. Winners of a special raffle for two portable filleting tables were Donna Falkevitch of Rivers and Ian Straker; a Cabela’s cargo bag was won by Josh Haisell of Winnipeg. The two filleting stations were donated by association members Richard English. Each competitor’s number was drawn for a prize from a collection of eye-catching items, donated by Rivers and Brandon businesses.
The tournament concluded with a delicious supper of cheeseburgers, potato salad and baked beans
