80 years ago, September 17, 1935:
For their meritorious work in connection with Free Press sales in Neepawa, five local carriers were given a free trip to Winnipeg Saturday and were treated to the big rugby game that night. They were Harold Orton, Elias Underwood, John Morris, Wilbur Pollock and Jack Johnson.
70 years ago, Thursday September 20, 1945:
This week marked the opening of a modern dry cleaning establishment operated by Rey’s.
Situated in a modern fireproof building at the rear of Rey’s store, the plant is of latest design and embodies every safety device known to the industry. In the event of a fire or explosion, the premises are flooded with steam within seconds.
In addition to dry cleaning, Rey’s now operate a fireproof fur storage vault, capable of handling 750 to 1,000 coats. Their fur storage includes insured storage, cleaning and glazing and a limited amount of alterations and repairs. A fur sewing machine has been added to their equipment.
60 years ago, Thursday September 22, 1955:
Fire of undetermined origin early Sunday afternoon, partially destroyed the garage of Matt Skibinsky of Eden. Damage to the building and its contents were unestimated up to Monday afternoon.
This is the second time within the period of three days that Mr. Skibinsky has suffered considerable loss at the garage. At about 3 am Thursday, September 15, the building was entered and the cash register was taken.
50 years ago, Friday September 17, 1965:
Neepawa and district residents plagued this week by the problem of daylight saving versus standard time, may not have a problem for much longer.
Tuesday night, Neepawa council met in a special session and indicated approval for a notice of motion, which will be voted on next Monday, rescinding the day light savings time bylaw approved earlier this year.
40 years ago, Thursday September 18, 1975:
Compulsory tubercular skin tests, or the equivalent, will be required for all employees of the Beautiful Plains School Division that come into contact with the students. Included in the group to undergo testing are all teachers, bus drivers, custodial and secretarial staff that have any dealings with the pupils. In the past the teachers underwent a voluntary program of testing. However a letter from the office of the public health nurse read at the Tuesday meeting of the Beautiful Plains School Division board asked whether this voluntary program should be also made available to division bus drivers. The board then decided to make such tests compulsory for all of their employees.
30 years ago, Thursday September 19, 1985:
It’s only a matter of time now, but once the hog processing plant is established, it will be located on town owned land.
The councils of Neepawa and the Rural Municipality of Langford have passed resolution to detach a quarter section of land east of Neepawa from Langford and annex it to the town.
Neepawa mayor Homer Gill said in a telephone interview he is pleased with the way negotiations have gone.
20 years ago, Monday September 19, 1995:
The Yellowhead Community Complex committee believes it has an idea that could reap a harvest of benefits for the years to come.
The committee is hoping to turn 356 acres at the Neepawa airport into a cash crop. Machinery, seed, fertilizer, fuel and manpower would be donated toward the farming operation.
Committee member Mike Stinchcombe said big-name partners have already been lined up for the venture including Simplot, UGG, Esso, Co-op, Petro-Canada and Manitoba Pool.
Stinchcombe also said the cropping venture would provide the ideal vehicle “for the committee to work together.”

Terry Fox anniversary: Gail Cathcart served up hotdogs at a BBQ at the County Courthouse grounds last week as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Terry Fox run. There were several events held in Neepawa last week, including the annual run on Sunday.
