Vyacheslav Stayanov and Yana Melamed stopped in Neepawa along their journey of Cycle 4 Recycle to refuel themselves on Sept. 3. The two cyclists from Bulgaria have already made 5,600 kms of their two year journey from Alaska to Argentina.

The two are on a mission to discover how the Americas deal with the environmental impact of waste and to discover what people’s attitudes are towards the environment, trash, and recycling. They cycle for about 100 kms a day, depending on fatigue and weather. They were headed towards Winnipeg, where they will be making a presentation about their mission to raise awareness for recycling and its impact on the environment. They have already made presentations in Edmonton and Saskatoon and will continue to make presentations along the way. They plan to head south from Winnipeg and to make stops in Chicago and New York before cycling towards the west coast and San Francisco.

They have had a well received journey so far and have been surprised about the diversity of thoughts and attitudes towards the environment of people across Canada so far. “We feel that Canada is a good place to start to change the world,” says Melamed. “People are very open to hearing about different things and that makes this a great place to start change.”
