A group of Neepawa and area residents have recently began filming a short movie at the Margaret Laurence Home in Neepawa.

Amanda Naughton-Gale and Don Phillips of Neepawa and Hollie Anne Kornik of Eden have adapted a one act play into a screenplay. The play is called A Matter of Husbands and is written by Ferenc Molnar. It was written and set in 1923. The crew decided that the Margaret Laurence Home would fit the time period well, so they got permission from the Margaret Laurence Home Committee to use the space.

All three of them worked together to adjust the script to use more modern language and make it fit for film.

They started filming on Monday, Nov. 16 and had their second day on Nov. 24. They have one more day of filming planned for Nov. 30, then they will put it all together. The finished product will be about 10 minutes long. Once it is finished, they plan to air it on Neepawa Access Television (NACTV).

The group calls itself the Neepawa Film Collective (NFC). This is the first of many productions that the organization plans to do. The NFC are also thinking of adapting some of Margaret Laurence’s short stories and poems into screenplays to film as well in the future.

The Collective is hopeful that the films will gain popularity by being aired on NACTV and that they will be able to sell some copies on DVD. Any proceeds from those sales would go directly to NACTV as well as the Margaret Laurence Home.
