30° below zero weather outside did not deter a large crowd from attending the first Masquerade Carnival in Neepawa’s new municipal rink on Friday night. It proved to be an enjoyable event for both old and young. Costumes were notable for their diversity and originality displayed was remarkable. Many adults, as well as children, dressed for the occasion. The ice was in excellent condition.

Neepawa is considered to be one of the electoral seats lost by Manitoba in the new carving up process of representatives to the House of Commons. Although the committee at Ottawa had not made any definite statement, it is expected that Neepawa and MacDonald will lose their seats.

A man and his wife sat in a booth in a café. Their heads were close together and their coffee was growing cold so engrossed were they in conversation. To all appearances, the scene was an innocent one, but if one was to take the liberty of eavesdropping, he would have probably heard a glowing example of one of the most dangerous practices existing today  – gossip.

Peter Dobchuk lost three pigs Monday night when a lynx entered his pigpen, killing one and mutilating the others to the extent they had to be destroyed. In these days of high pork prices, this is quite a loss for the Dobchuk family. District skidoo hunters are on the alert and hope to track down the marauder before more damage is done.

Lisgar–Marquette MP Jake Hoeppner says he is being persecuted by the Canadian Wheat Board and his life has been threatened by his attempts to expose corruption. But the lone Manitoba Reform MP stopped short of saying the Federal Grain Marketing Agency is behind the death threats.

“My intent is not to destroy our system but to expose the inherent problems and irregularities that exists in an industry that enjoys  immunity from public scrutiny,” Hoeppner said in a news conference in Winnipeg last week.
