A wave of blue swept across Manitoba on April 19, with Brian Pallister’s Progressive Conservative Party taking 40 of the province’s 57 seats in the Legislature, to form government. The NDP, which held 37 seats going into the provincial election came out with just 14 seats. Following the NDP’s defeat, Greg Selinger announced his resignation as party leader.  Within the Banner’s coverage area, two first-time MLAs were elected to their seats.

It was approximately 57 years ago since we last set foot in the bowling alleys, which were in the downstairs area in Alex and Tom Hyra’s Regent Bowling & Billiards. The year was circa 1959 when we last set pins for the Hyra’s and getting the chance to see our old stomping grounds was a huge treat on our recent visit to our old home town, Neepawa. It was the usual four hombres, Cam Smith, Ron Kleven, Barry Deveson and me. We usually get back to Neepawa at least a couple of times each year.

On April 5, 17 Grade 9 French students from NACI and their teachers, Nora Heschuk and Sherri Hollier traveled to Saint-Tite-des-Caps, Quebec for a week-long adventure with their twins from le Collège des Hauts Sommets.

Sarah Jackson, who is on a cross-Canada trek from British Columbia to Newfoundland, passed through the Neepawa area last week. Jackson stayed with Bob and Karen Chabot, who live about seven miles south of Neepawa, for a few days on her walk. She set off again on Wednesday, April 13 to continue east.

Ms. Reeves has a passion for the natural landscape and all the wonders contained within. She’ll give us a quick tutorial on many native Manitoba plants and their little-known nutritional and healing properties, as well as many practical uses and delicious recipes that we can all make at home.
