Senior Election Official
The province of Manitoba passed legislation in 2012 forcing municipalities with populations of less than 1,000 to complete a plan to amalgamate by Dec. 2, 2013. RM of Blanshard, RM of Saskatchewan and Town of Rapid City have agreed to amalgamate to become RM of Oakview. Due to amalgamation, there will be many changes in the upcoming municipal election. The first council of Oakview will be composed of a head and six councillors. The head of council will be elected at large from the current municipalities of Blanshard, Saskatchewan and Rapid City (one reeve will be elected as opposed to two reeves and one mayor). Councillors of the new municipality are to be elected on the basis of two councillors elected at large from the following wards: Ward 1 is currently the Town of Rapid City, Ward 2 is currently the RM of Saskatchewan and Ward 3 is currently the RM of Blanshard.

After seven years of experience planning hockey tournaments in his former hometown of Cardale, Scott Peters of Rivers is switching seasons and co-ordinating a ball tournament in Rivers. The two-day affair will be held Sept. 19 and 20 on the UCT diamond and the old senior diamond, northeast of the easily recognizable UCT field. Scott admits he needs to clean that area before then but believes it to still be a playable space. But it is this lack of space that prompted the tournament.

Rivers and District Chamber of Commerce held its latest meeting on Aug. 20 and on Aug. 19, president Melissa Macmillan emailed vice-president Ken Tait her resignation, effective immediately. Thankfully, Ken agreed to step into the chair 16 months ahead of schedule (presidency is a two-year term) and it was a seamless transition as he has chaired five of seven previous meetings. Since Ken accepted the new responsibility, another vice-president is required and of the 14 people present, none volunteered for the role.
