As I write these words, the investigation into the recent Toronto killings is on-going. A 25 year old male suspect has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of first degree and 13 counts of attempted murder. A 14th charge, police say, may be laid soon.

My heart is troubled. We have lost many lives this past month through accidents and willful destruction. And with many others I say “why?” Young people’s lives were cut short. Moms and Dads lost part of their family. It is heartbreaking. Some are still in hospital and may be scarred for life.

April 28, 1999 was the day Rev. Dale Lang’s world changed forever. It started with a phone call. The message was short: “Jason (Lang’s 17 year old son) has been shot.” As Lang would later share: “I didn’t ask any questions. I didn’t need to. I knew it was serious.” It was, in fact, very serious. Jason subsequently died from his wounds.

In many ways, the events of the last three weeks have been nothing short of miraculous.Never in my lifetime have I seen such an outpouring of support as has come in the wake of the accident that took the lives of 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team. Over $10 million has been raised to help the victims’ families and the team. Expressions of sympathy and offers of assistance have come from all parts of the country.

Adjusting to the sudden death of a loved one or close friend is never easy. I know. I have been in that situation often enough to realize just how quickly and easily a life can be lost. All it takes is one unfortunate event and a life can be instantly snuffed out. A grieving family and community are left to ask “Why? Why did this person have to die; why this way; and why now?”
