One of my favourite sayings goes like this: “If you ever stop learning, you stop growing; and the moment you stop growing is the moment you start dying.” We begin learning about life from the moment we are born. Parents, teachers and others guide us through the adjustments that we must make as we move through each stage of life. The process is not without its rough spots, as we all know. And it doesn’t end until the day we die.

A friend came to visit me and stayed for a few days. She had to bring her own bed and bedding which she gladly did. Someone said that this was a real friend. We had fun together, played games and it made the time fly by. I’m sure everybody has those precious friends who put everything aside and come for a visit.

Two significant events happened in the first half of 1945. One made the headlines. It’s highly unlikely that the other one got any coverage at all, for reasons that will soon become obvious. In May of that year, the front pages of major newspapers around the world carried the news that, after over five years of fighting in Europe and north Africa, the war against Germany had ended. What followed was the biggest party England had ever seen, as people took to the streets in the first of what would become an annual commemoration of VE (Victory in Europe) Day.

My thought this week has been on being alone and loneliness. Two words that can have opposite meanings. I am alone here in my room and it is a good time to reflect and concentrate on my writing. Jesus needed to be alone at times “and He withdrew Himself into the wilderness, and prayed” (Luke 5:16). We all need to be alone from time to time to pray and restore our thinking.

He was only 55 years of age. He had risen at his usual time on the morning of December 28, and sat down at his computer. He died suddenly and unexpectedly shortly thereafter. Phil (his real name) was born in Nigeria, Central Africa. His parents were Christian missionaries in the neighboring country of Chad. After completing his public schooling (part of it in Africa, the rest in Alberta) and Bible College in Saskatchewan, Phil applied for and was accepted as a member of the RCMP. He retired six years ago after a distinguished career as a peace officer.
