The Neepawa Farmers didn’t get the end result they were hoping for in their home opener, as the team was defeated by the Cartwright Clippers 6-4. The game, played on Sunday, Oct. 30, was the second of the Tiger Hills Hockey League (THHL) season for Neepawa, as the club won on the road against Deloraine the previous weekend. The Farmers were looking to keep that momentum going in the friendly confines of the Yellowhead Centre. It would be the Clippers, however, who jumped out to the early advantage, with a goal just 4:34 left in the opening period to make it 1-0.

In the second, it appeared as though Neepawa had tied things up just 2:25 into the period. The referee, however, waved off the goal, citing goaltender interference on the play. That decision not only took a goal away from the Farmers, but also put them on the penalty kill. Cartwright took advantage, scoring their second of the evening.

Neepawa answered back, however, as Riley Kolesar put away a chance near the mid point of the period. That happiness from the home side didn’t last long, as the Clippers replied with another marker just 1:07 later, to reclaim the two goal lead.

Heading into the third, Neepawa pulled out all the stops to make the comeback. First, Matt Lowry put in a tremendous effort, streaking in off the left side to put one away. Then, just 15 seconds later, Cam Tibbett slammed home his first of the season, to tie things up at 3-3. That was followed up a few minutes later with a power-play goal by Lowry, to give the Farmers their first lead of the night at 4-3.

Unfortunately, the Cartwright Clippers would reel off goals from Bryce Enns and Troy Schott in quick succession to reclaim the lead Drew Haight tallied one more, with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation, to secure the Cartwright win. Lowry ended the night with a pair of goals for the Farmers, to go with Kolesar and Tibbett’s singles. Devon Speiss, meanwhile, closed out the game with a pair of assists. With the loss, Neepawa’s record moved to 1-1-0 at this early portion of the THHL season.

The next game for the Farmers will take place on Friday, Nov. 4, when they hit the road to Gladstone to face the Lakers. Start time in Gladstone for that contest is set for 8:30 p.m.
