There’s an app for that — well, sort of. Many Manitoba RCMP vehicles are now equipped with software and printers so officers can issue e-tickets to motorists committing infractions on Manitoba highways. The e-ticketing system, the first of its kind in Manitoba, is a positive step forward for road safety in the province.

During a traffic stop, an officer will swipe the driver’s licence through an electronic card reader and the offence information will be added by the officer. An e-ticket is generated roadside at the time of the offence and printed in the car. The data from the ticket is immediately provided to police databases, and then the information is sent electronically to Manitoba Justice.

Redundant data entry is eliminated, and both the RCMP and Manitoba Justice receive accurate, immediate information.

RCMP has made road safety a top priority, and e-ticketing is one of the methods being used to help get Manitobans home safely. Manitoba RCMP officers stop more than 50,000 vehicles and write approximately 34,000 provincial offence notices each year. By implementing e-ticketing, the plan is to enhance enforcement by engaging a larger number of high-risk drivers and stopping their dangerous behaviour.

“E-ticketing will enhance public safety,” says assistant commissioner Kevin Brosseau, commanding officer of Manitoba RCMP. “Police will be able to stop more drivers, and police traffic stops reduce crime. Not only do they take dangerous drivers off the road, but police also apprehend travelling criminals, stop the illicit movement of drugs and other contraband, and remove unsafe vehicles from the road. Traffic stops help keep our communities safe and e-ticketing will help our officers make more traffic stops.”

E-ticketing will also increase public and officer safety by reducing time spent on the side of the road, reduce the amount of “spoiled” tickets, improve the accuracy and timeliness of road safety data and enhance enforcement analysis.Canadians’ safety, security and well-being are RCMP’s ultimate goals and e-ticketing is one more tool being used to accomplish that.
