With the recent events in Brandon related to “Stranger Danger,” Rivers Elementary School had an assembly on March 13 to review important personal safety tips. During assembly Rivers Police Chief Bruce Klassen gave students some tips to be safe. These tips include: walk with someone to and from school and always use the buddy system; establish a safe word with parents if a family friend is picking you up from school; if approached by a stranger, run away and tell an adult you trust right away; parents/guardians should report concerning incidents to police immediately and obtain the best description of suspects and vehicles including licence plate numbers.

Our community utilizes a wide variety of measures to ensure student safety supporting our young students. We know families do a great job of dropping off and picking up their children at appropriate times and locations. Community members in vehicles keep watch for students at our 3:30 p.m. dismissal. Rivers Police are also outside the school every morning ready to help with any safety concerns. In addition, our local Lions Club is providing students with a personal ID kit to teach students how to equip themselves with tools necessary to deal with an unsafe situation with strangers. We look forward to class activities after spring break with Rivers Police Service and Rivers and Area Lions Club when students will take home their ID kits. These kits are an excellent resource for parents to use as a guide to talk with children about “Stranger Danger.”

We appreciate all the support from families and community members helping Rivers Elementary keep our students safe.
