More shelter for Rivers

Because of the harsh 2014 winter, Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee applied to Manitoba Hydro Forest Enhancement Program to replace some of the trees which did not survive. The committee was fortunate to receive funding of $14,233.07 to replace the various trees within the community, inclusive of Rivers Cemetery and Millennium Park. This work was completed by Alternative Landscaping; the bottom photo shows the new silver maples planted in the northwest corner of the cemetery.

Healthy Rivers Area, in conjunction with the Wetland Centre of Excellence, also applied to the Manitoba Hydro Forest Enhancement. They received funding in the amount of $4,890 to obtain trees to provide not only shelter from the wind on the northeast side of the wetland area but to catch the moisture as well. The top photo of eight spruce trees in a line shows how this will assist in solving these two problems. This work was completed through The Green Spot – Whetter Landscaping.

We are fortunate to have received these new trees as they will continue to enhance our community. Riverdale Municipality supported both these projects and will have Green Team students watering the trees throughout the summer and into fall.
