Collegiate competes for Canley Can

As most activities go, this one started as a small idea and quickly morphed into a significant undertaking. It all began when Riley Shamray and Riley Lamb came up with the idea of putting on a floor hockey tournament for a noon hour activity. About the same time, Liliane Dupuis approached Rivers Collegiate Institute (RCI) with an idea to assist Riverdale Harvest with renewing their inventory. The Grade 7 social studies class turned both ideas into a hugely successful food drive, due to the terrific support of RCI staff and student body, parents and Little Italy of Brandon.

Six teams participated in floor hockey for the month of May. Each player and fan was asked to contribute one non-perishable food item to participate as a player or a fan. The winning team was Erich Schmidt, Trevor Johnston, Brendan English, Zach Veitch, Nathan Krahn and Owen Wareham.

Grade 7 students also organized a one-day homeroom challenge where each grade was challenged to outdo the other with donations of non-perishable food items. In a close battle, the Grade 11s came out on top with a total weight of 47 kilograms of food. As winners of the challenge, Grade 11 received a pizza party reward from Little Italy of Brandon, owned and operated by Martin Dupuis (a former RCI student) and partners. The grand total of food collected at RCI was 180 kilograms.
