Rapid City 4-H 60th celebration

Rapid City 4-H Beef Club held its 60th anniversary achievement on June 20, in conjunction with the town’s annual fair. Eight 4-H members, three pee wee members and four leaders began the day with the annual parade, in which their float received first-place from Rapid City Chamber of Commerce.

After the parade, members started achievement, with Darcy Hickson announcing. The judge was Carman Jackson from Inglis with Eric Van Meijl and Christopher Hillis, both former members, being ring person and show marshall respectively. Shelly Hillis was our photographer for the day and Laura Horner took steer pictures the night before for the buyers’ thank-yous.First class of the day was senior grooming, first Drew Horner, second James Reid; intermediate grooming, first Wyatt Inglis, second Thijs VandeLangemheen, third Gavin Reid; junior grooming first Brooklyn Hedley, second Anja VandeLangemheen; cloverbud grooming, first Sierra Inglis; senior showmanship, Drew and James; intermediate showmanship, Wyatt, Thijs and Gavin; junior showmanship, Brooklyn and Anja; cloverbud showmanship, Sierra.

There was a break for lunch and members met in the show ring where five-year certificates were given to Thijs and Wyatt, an eight-year seal to Drew and leader seals to Alan Horner (11 years) and Deb Inglis (23 years). MLA Leanne Rowat gave each member a certificate to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the club. Project book awards were also handed out: first to Wyatt, second to Thijs and third to Sierra. Judging awards, resulting from the clinic May 9, were: senior first and second, Drew and James; intermediate Wyatt, Thijs, Gavin; junior, Anja, Brooklyn, Sierra. Highest average daily gains were given to Wyatt with 4.28 pounds (progeny), Thijs, 3.8 1 pounds, Wyatt, 3.44 pounds (market), Anja, 2.95 pounds. Future 4-H members Grayson Van Meijl, Aklen Abey and Zane Finlay were awarded rosettes and prize money for a job well done. 

After lunch the show commenced with progeny steer class, champion Wyatt, reserve champion Drew Horner; market steer champion Thijs, reserve steer Drew, Anja, Wyatt and Brooklyn placed third-fifth respectively in market steer. Grand champion steer was the top two from progeny and market with the winner by Thijs, reserve champion steer was Wyatt; best steer shown by a member 14 years and under was Anja, then Wyatt and Brooklyn; champion beginning beef, Sierra; reserve champion beginning beef, Brooklyn; Anja won third place; champion progeny heifer, Wyatt; champion yearling heifer, Drew; reserve champion yearling heifer, Brooklyn; placing third-seventh respectively were Wyatt, James, Thijs, Anja and Gavin; grand champion yearling heifer, the top two from yearling and progeny heifers, was Drew, reserve grand champion yearling heifer was Brooklyn; best home-raised heifer was Drew; champion continuation, Drew; reserve champion continuation, Thijs; Wyatt and Gavin placed third and fourth respectively in continuation; supreme female, Drew; champion mature continuation, Wyatt; reserve champion mature continuation, Gavin; champion yearling, Drew; reserve champion yearling Wyatt, other yearling winners were Brooklyn and Anja.

This concludes the 4-H achievement for 2015. It was a great success in our new surroundings for the cattle show and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Good luck to all our members for the inter-club show at Neepawa. We will host our 60th anniversary celebration in September; have a great summer and we’ll see you in the fall!
