Enrolment increase at Rivers Collegiate

Rivers Collegiate Institute (RCI) principal Mike Klassen has remarked via the school’s newsletter, The Rambler, that although there has been a slight increase in student enrolment in recent years, the increase soared this year with 33 in Grade 7 and 28 in Grade 8. As a result, there has been a need for more teacher time. This extra time will be focused on English and math; Brenda Sokoloski was coaxed out of her two-month retirement to fill this position.

Grade 9 students will take part in Take Your Kid to Work Day on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Students will be given the opportunity to earn up to eight high school credits while possibly earning money and gaining valuable experience in a variety of trades. Students can participate in this program on weekends, after school or during the summer.

In team sports, 13 varsity girls learned team skills and drills from Brandon University Bobcat men’s volleyball team. The girls travelled to Gilbert Plains to compete in their first tournament of the season, losing their first game in playoffs to Ebb & Flow, so were eliminated. They also played in tournaments in Boissevain and Hamiota. In league play, they lost to Carberry (1-3) and won over MacGregor (3-1). Junior varsity boys volleyball team played in tournaments in Neepawa, MacGregor and Boissevain, and are preparing to host the provincial championships Nov. 19-21. The boys are co-oping with Ecole La Source for the season, with the provincials to be played at CFB Shilo. In league play, the boys lost their first game to Carberry (1-3) then won over Neepawa (3-2).

Those who successfully earned sports in their respective regional hockey teams were Riley Shamray (Waywayseecappo Wolverines), Riley Lamb and Morgan Ramsay (male and female AAA midget Yellowhead Chiefs), Zach Veitch, Owen Wareham, Cameron Ramsay and Sadie Wood (male and female bantam Yellowhead Chiefs).
